A bus seat backrest must be able to withstand a force of more than one ton in crash safety tests.

So a pair of seats must be able to withstand twice that load - two tons!

Dynamic Tests

Ordinary bus seats are designed to withstand the load applied by the passenger in the seat behind.

However if a seat is fitted with a three-point seatbelt, it must also be capable of withstanding the load applied when the occupant's body is thrown forward in a collision, and the weight when the body is thrown back into the seat.

At the same time as the safety requirements were tightened up, the bus buyer demands for lower weight of vehicle parts became more insistent, in order to increase the load-carrying area and reduce the fuel consumption.
